Chicago is the proud home to numerous ethnic groups including Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Lithuanian, Mexican, and Polish, among others. This rich environment provides a unique opportunity for students to work with populations from around the globe, thereby fostering a foundation to working in the field of global health.

Chloe Polutnik, a second-year MPH student, works to improve health among refugee populations in Chicago. "I gained great qualitative data collection skills. I was able to conduct interviews and focus groups with refugee women to better learn if they thought a pregnancy program was appropriate, determine what they learned, and to use this information to improve the program."
Spearheaded by Dr. Janet Lin, a group of UIC SPH students and health care professionals completed a health project in Haiti for the second consecutive year. With collaboration, the goal is for subsequent SPH student groups to return and build on the project findings.
Jason Glaser, La Isla Foundation Founder and President, visited UIC SPH on February 12, 2012. Mr. Glaser discussed his foundation’s role in addressing an epidemic of kidney disease among agricultural workers on sugar-cane plantations in the Chichigalpa region of western Nicaragua. Mr. Glaser also talked with students about ways to get involved with La Isla Foundation, including internship and practicum opportunities.
